All students have a PE lesson each week up to Year 9 - this then becomes an optional subject for GCSE. All students also have the opportunity to play a variety of Sports in dedicated Games afternoons which is timetabled for the whole school each week. We have 3 qualified sports coaches to enable us to deliver team sports on these afternoons.
The many sports that are covered throughout the year include Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cross Country, Football, Tag Rugby, Cricket, Athletics and Rounders
We hold a full sports day each summer term as we lay a 150 metre track to allow proper timings, relays and personal bests to develop.
We also field teams/individuals in a series of sports such as horse riding, sailing, basketball, golf, fencing, cycling. We have had national champions in cycling and sailing, and regional winners in horse-riding and golf.
We play almost all island schools and also play on the mainland – eg Dorset House in Sussex at Hockey; Hampshire competitions and schools rugby at the Trojans ground in Southampton.
Our rugby is particularly strong with school teams junior and senior registering wins against Ryde School and in tournaments held at Ryde and with the Free School, and in 7s tournaments. We have had many successes on the mainland too, for example, one of our girl's teams came 4th out of 41 schools.
We have fielded combined cricket and golf teams with Ryde School and regularly travel to their excellent facilities to play. We share coaching with them and enjoy very good relations with our sister independent school.
Our athletics in the summer is particularly strong, with our relay teams over 2017-18 winning in the big schools meet at Sandown track both girls and boys relays, and holding at various times 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump, shot and discus 1st places. Many pupils after the Sandown schools meet have then run for the island at Hampshire events, and indeed further at regional events. We cannot wait to compete in this again when it restarts.
