Our Tuesday Talks are well on the way and we are very grateful to those who have given a talk so far.
Last week was given by Mr Mark Rhodes, formerly of Hose Rhodes Dickson Estate Agents, and Mark got the year off to a fabulous start by discussing his career in property, setting up the agency and ultimately selling it.
He provided useful insight into careers in surveying and the Island property market, and finished with a ‘taster’ on a follow up talk planned for later in the year on building your own home and all that entails, including the importance of energy efficiency and conservation for us and future generations.
We look forward to welcoming Mark back later in the academic year.
He explained what insurance is, the nature of risk and how insurance companies make profits, the latter by explaining the difference between premiums and claim pay outs. He also told some interesting tales of weird things insured, for example, David Beckham’s legs and the Cadbury taster’s taste buds!
Mr Heather told us how NFU Mutual are the UK’s biggest rural insurers, and both during and after his talk he was bombarded with questions. He finished with careers in insurance, for example, his role dealing with clients right the way through to the actuaries (mathematicians) who calculate risk and premiums.
We are very grateful to Mr Heather, and once again, I encourage all parents to think about delivering a Tuesday Talk.
